MY FIRST AMERICAN SUMMER

by Lissette Mendez

A GIRL NEWLY ARRIVED

FROM CUBA REMEMBERS DETAILS OF HER FIRST AMERICAN SUMMER.

My first weeks in Miami are like bright photographs my memory shuffles with the dexterity of a Las Vegas cardsharp: My uncle and I crossing Washington Avenue at Lincoln Road, when I see, behind plate glass, the most beautiful dolls in the world—round eyes with lids that open and close, shiny, fat caramel curls—miniature Scarlett O’Haras in peach and aqua ruffled taffeta. At the pharmacy, fuzz-ball fridge magnets with rattling plastic eyes, felt feet glued to their undersides. These fuzzy magnets are hot pink and red, or yellow as the chicks I saw hatch just months before in the packed-dirt backyard of my friend’s house in Havana. At Pantry Pride supermarket, the dog toys: squeezy burgers and pork chops and hot dogs. I could really play house with these, I think. And the candy racks by the registers. Once, because I have no coins of my own and am too embarrassed to ask the grandmother I just met, I steal a pack of Cinn-A-Burst. White sunshine, like knives slicing through the windows, makes brilliant the red Kit Kat bars, cream yellow Whatchamacallits, and slick-white, bumpy Almond Joys as I slip the gum in my pocket and walk out the mechanical door.
